Aren’t We About Collaboration, Not Competition?
Of course, we are, but you know my approach is not always straightforward.
We all know our words can be powerful, in fact, they can be transformative, and not always for the better. Some words can elicit a very visceral, gut-wrenching reaction within us. How do you feel when you hear the words…racism, slavery, domestic violence, or RSD? On the other hand, what do you feel when hearing…brotherhood, heart-based, beach, or hugs?
Our everyday speech definitely affects how we feel, and it can alter our thought patterns, especially the words we speak repeatedly about ourselves…and hear others often say about us. I will tell you I know that for a fact. For most of my life, I have had zero self-esteem, even when I knew I had some exceptional gifts and talents.
When I met Terri, I had low self-esteem, but in the past three years, it has grown. Why? I am hearing positive expressions from others so that I can now say positive statements about myself.
So what about competition? Originally a Latin word that meant..to strive together for. That doesn’t sound like what we understand as compete. However, if it is separated into the two Latin words…com + pete.. it means … together to rush at. That sounds more like our understanding of the word compete.
Is that the way we choose to operate as Heartrepreneurs? What do you call those not part of your business, but in the same field? Some say competition is necessary for our capitalist market. Is it? Here is a list of synonyms for competition: rival, rivalry, antagonist, strife, adversary, warfare, conflict, clash, friction, quarrel, opponent. How do those words feel? Like a punch to the gut.
Look at the last word in that list… opponent. The word opposite comes from opponent. There is a common two-word expression used thousands of times every day that starts with the word… opposite. Do you know it? Yup, you do. Opposite sex. When referring to the other gender many say…the opposite sex. Scuse me, but what the hell does that mean…really? Opposite of what? Men/male and women/female are different, but opposite…huuuhhh?
Opposite is opponent. Opponent is rival, antagonist, adversary, challenger.
The more often we speak and hear an expression the more embedded it becomes in our brain affecting our thinking and actions. Think about this; how much of the gender inequalities can be traced to the use of that expression that has division and fighting inherently in it’s meaning? This affects our personal and business lives. So why isn’t the other gender just that …Other?
So then, those not part of our business, that happens to work in the same field are just others in the same business arena.
As Heartrepreneurs we are aiming to create a business ecosystem… interrelated, working as one unit, with many diverse facets. So how do we refer to fellow Heartrepreneurs? Here is a list of antonyms of the word competition: harmony, teamwork, accord, alliance, partner, bond, union, colleague, unity, goodwill, love. If we continue to work as a harmonious unit, we will all blossom…as people and as businesses.
So again, what’s in a word? POWER…power to create or destroy, beauty or ugliness.
I know the words I Love. Are you with me?
