Nichole Carlson On How To Stop Overthinking By Unleashing Your Inner Calling
I have with me Nichole Carlson. Nichole Carlson works with six and seven-figure earners who are successful yet struggling with stress, anxiety, and overwhelm. Inside, they feel like they are barely holding it together. I know some of those people. Nichole put the switch inside of them to help them breakthrough in business, bring back the passion in their relationships, and she gives them the energy to be able to keep going instead of burning out. What an important topic. Welcome to Heartrepreneur Radio, Nichole.
Thank you so much for having me, Terri.
I’ve been looking forward to having you because I know lots of six and seven-figure earners. I know on the outside, people see them, and they think, “Amazing, what a great life. They’re so successful,” and yet behind the scenes, everything that you said is true, the stress and the anxiety. They don’t feel like it’s even together. How did you decide to work with these particular people?
I used to be that person in my twenties. I was married. I had the American dream. My ex-husband and I were both software engineers, and then I just felt so empty inside. I didn’t know who I was. I was on my twenties, but I didn’t know what I wanted. I knew that I was desperately unhappy. I was in that state for twelve years. I was in that relationship for twelve years. It wasn’t until my mom passed away, and she’s only 47, that I realized life is so short. I cannot stay in this situation. I got to figure myself out. I know what it’s like to be that person where it looks like everything’s perfect and yet you just feel like everything’s missing.
I relate to you so much because twenty something years ago, I was President of the National Healthcare Company, making boatloads of money, stock options, cars, bonuses, and all of that. The amount of stress and tension and anxiety and frustration and everything. My hair was falling out of my head, literally. I was miserable. My friends and family thought it must be awesome to be you. Very interestingly, my mom died. Seven days after she died, my girlfriend died of breast cancer at the age of 40. That was my wake-up call. I said, “What am I doing?” I literally walked away from corporate America. I’ve never looked back. I started my coaching and consulting business and I have created this amazing and awesome life. I didn’t even think that it’d be possible to build up to a seven-figure income and I wasn’t even concerned about that. I knew I needed to have a better life. The business followed, but I was all about life. Thank you for sharing what happened for you. How do you find somebody who’s willing to step up, raise their hand and say, “Yes, Nichole. That really is me?”
I do a lot of social media. I’m on Facebook. I have a Facebook Live show and then I interact with people on Facebook. I’m starting LinkedIn, but mostly a lot of people are on Facebook.
I mostly find 90% of my ideal client, family members from Facebook as well. Facebook Live is one of the best tools. What’s something that you can tell one of our listeners who might be six or seven-figure, might be successful, and yet not feeling like things are going well or going right in their business or in their lives, more importantly?
The biggest thing is belief that they could have the things that they want in their life, and then knowing what you want. There is a way to figure it out. This is one of the basic things that I worked with a lot of people on. You would think that you’re making six and seven figures and you would know what you want, but on a very fundamental level, a lot of these people don’t know what they want in their relationships. They don’t know that it’s possible. They don’t know how to get that either. Just the possibility that it can happen for them is so important.
That’s an important point that Nichole makes. Sometimes, we don’t even know what we want. I knew for myself I was unhappy. I knew that I didn’t feel like I was having quality of life. If you said to me, “What do you want?” I didn’t know. When I hired a personal development coach to help me, even though I’ve done personal development my whole life, I needed help to figure out what is it that would be important and how could I have more joy and more passion. That was one of the best investments I ever made.
Another thing, if you’re making that much money and your life looks perfect on the outside, you feel so guilty saying you’re unhappy. You’re not even sure why you’re unhappy because it looks like you have it all. You have all this guilt, so you just don’t say anything. That’s why we get stuck for years and years like I did and probably felt this way for a long time because we have this guilt that why should we ask for more when we already have it all?
[Tweet “We have this guilt that why should we ask for more when we already have it all?”]
That’s a great point, too. I remember talking to one of my girlfriends and saying, “I’ve got to get some help,” and she said, “I would love to be in your shoes. You have everything.” I thought it may look like that on the outside, but I was actually crying on the inside. Is there a tip or a tool that you can give people that they can maybe apply that will really help them start to maybe get re-energized, more passionate, or whatever it might be?
I hate saying, “Love yourself,” because a lot of people don’t know what that means. I would say spend time with yourself as if you were dating yourself. Write yourself a love letter, spend time with yourself by yourself, do things that you enjoy, and be in gratitude for yourself and who you are. Rebuild that relationship with yourself and think of it as if someone was loving you. There’s two of you in there and that you’re loving yourself.
I’ve never heard that advice and it really resonates. Is there anything that we need to give up or get rid of that might be helpful?
Start looking at anything that is causing you stress, anxiety, and overwhelm and ask yourself why it is causing that negative emotion and what you can do to release that. We tend to carry a lot on our shoulders of other people’s opinions and advice and expectations and we don’t need to do all of that. Start looking at where you’re feeling uneasy and start taking some of that out of your life.
I know there’s so many things that we can all let go of. The truth is we have to be willing to do some of the right things and let go of some of the wrong things in order to transform. I’m sure you have many more tools and a whole big tool kit for us. What would you like to leave people with and definitely how can people connect with you?
