HPR 126 | Mindful Living

What we see happening most for people is the constant desire for more but they’re not allowing themselves to be happy in the journey. Rachael Thompson, owner of Mind Body & Spirit Entrepreneur, says mindful living is very important. She realized from her own journey that she was never going to find happiness on the outside until she first fostered it on the inside. That pushed her to create a business to help others who wanted the same things, who wanted that happiness and that fulfillment. Rachael now helps her tribe uncover and pursue their life purpose by fostering a balanced internal state and taking aligned action. She talks about some simple steps you can take to live life on purpose through mindful living.

Mindful Living: Rediscovering Who You Truly Are with Rachael Thompson

I have with me Rachael Thompson. She’s an author, podcast host, online instructor and the owner of Mind Body & Spirit Entrepreneur. She helps her tribe uncover and pursue their life purpose by fostering a balanced internal state and taking aligned action. We’re going to talk about some simple steps you can take to mindfully live life on purpose. Rachael, welcome to our show.

Thank you so much for having me.

It’s great to be with you and I could tell that we’re very aligned. Even Mind Body & Spirit Entrepreneur, that resonates so deeply. How did you get started and what caused you to go down this track?

It came from my own experiences of following the path I thought would bring me happiness. Everybody told me I should take. I did the whole college, graduate school, 9 to5 job, bought a house, living in suburbs, all of that. I was like, “I’m still not happy. I’m not fulfilled.” I didn’t like my job. I wasn’t happy on any level. I took a drastic action and moved to a new city, a new state, hours away from all my loved ones. I decided that I was going to start my own business. I was like, “That’s probably going to make me happy.” What I found was it caused a lot of stress and it brought up a lot of fears, anxieties, mental and emotional blocks that I had within myself. All of that negatively affected my business.

At that point in time, I got involved in spiritual and personal development. I wanted to overcome these blocks so that I could find this happiness I’ve been searching for. I spent several years doing that and out of that experience, Mind Body & Spirit Entrepreneur was born. I realized from my own journey that I was never going to find happiness on the outside until I first fostered it on the inside. I wanted to create a business to help others who wanted the same things, who wanted that happiness and that fulfillment. I want to help them do it the right way and not make all the mistakes that I made.

They say happiness is an inside job. Most people in the world seemed to be seeking happiness externally. What do you see happening with most people that you speak with and that you work with?

What I see is a constant desire for more and not allowing themselves to be happy in the journey. Thinking once I get to this point, then I will find happiness and I’ll allow myself to be happy. What I encourage people to do is try to find happiness in every step of the process because it’s like kids at Christmas. Christmas morning, the kids are all excited. They love their toys and a week later they only played with one of the toys that they got and the rest are sitting on a shelf somewhere. It’s the same with us. We get so excited for something and we think that one event, we can do this, it’s going to give us everything we need. What we find is when we get there, we still have that yearning. That would be the biggest thing is that constant desire and people refusing to let themselves be happy during the process.

I’m so glad you said that because I always talk about it’s definitely the journey and not the destination. For example, all you want to do is get to the destination, you’re missing the juice of life, and you’re missing it. Sometimes the journey has more juice in it and more excitement, more fulfillment than the destination. If everything is getting to the destination, it’s like, “I got there now what?” Losing twenty pounds isn’t going to necessarily make you happy. Taking that vacation, it’s over. You’re not going to remain happy. It’s a major shift for most people to get that it’s coming from the inside. It’s coming from an internal balance. Give us a couple of steps, if you would, to help people live your words that were so beautiful: mindfully live life on purpose.

The first part is to mindfully do so. What I mean by mindfully is to become aware of how much of your life you are living in alignment. In alignment with your true self and how much of your life you are living based on expectation, on fear, on how you were socialized, and on how you think you should act. That’s step one, understanding and rediscovering who you truly are. If you’re taking any action or you’re thinking any thoughts that do not come from your authentic self, to recognize that as, “This is a fear that is probably coming up because of the way that I was raised and the beliefs that I learned surrounding money.” Once you’re able to do that, then you’re able to separate who you truly are from those fears, from those limiting beliefs. Practicing simple mindfulness techniques. There are tons of books and different resources out there to help you be mindful.

Often we want to escape the present moment, so we’ll be driving in our car and we’ll be thinking about five million other things or even when we’re spending time with loved ones. We want to get on our phone and see what everybody else is doing on social media. Mindfulness in its simplest term is bringing yourself back to those moments and allowing yourself to be in that very moment because once you allow yourself to be in this moment and sit in whatever feelings you’re feeling at the time, that’s when you learn the most about yourself.

Mindful Living: Become aware of how much of your life you are living in alignment.

If you’re sitting in the car and you’re feeling anxious or you’re feeling angry, instead of trying to distract your mind, sit in it and become curious, where is this coming from? That’s when you start to unpack all the junk that we all carry around. You can start to unpack it. Once you do that you free yourself up. After you do that, I would say the next important step is starting to take that aligned action. You will start to get some insights and intuitions once you start to clear yourself out of this programming and limiting beliefs and all that. You don’t want to be scared to try something new. You don’t want to be scared to try something that might be out of the norm that nobody else in your life would understand because those actions could be true to yourself and it is fearful to do something that is brand new.

You will have feelings of fear but what I encourage you to do is recognize the fear and do it anyway. There are a lot of things that I did in my journey, these little tiny actions that I thought were weird that I’d never done before. Looking back, I can see how every single little action that I did that was scary, that I had to push past that fear led me to an amazing place. I would say those would be the two steps. First, become mindful and try to discover who you are beneath it all. Then secondly, once you’re starting to find your true self and align with that, take some action and see how it goes.

I’m all about being mindful. No matter what you do, I don’t care if you’re sitting down and you’re eating a handful of grapes, be mindful, be focused, be intent in that. I loved how you talked about get under it all. One of the words you use that I resonated with deeply is be curious. That’s a way we can become open. We can explore ourselves, the universe, and then the unpacking, the freedom that we start to find when we go underneath and then we can tap into our intuition and that’s where we can take our aligned actions. When we’re lined up and we take an action, my experience is things come to fruition. When we’re not lined up and we take an action, it doesn’t do what we wanted it to do. Then we go, “That action didn’t work.” Maybe we weren’t in alignment with the action.

Whenever you’re saying that, I think of my first business that did not come from alignment and when things didn’t work out, I was so frustrated. I got so down on myself. I was beating myself up. There were plenty of tears, but looking back, it wasn’t right for me. If that business would have been as successful as I would’ve hoped, then I would’ve never been forced to go down this path that I’m on now, I would’ve never started my second business, which is in alignment. It can be hard whenever you’re struggling. You do something that doesn’t work out and you get frustrated.

From your experience and from my experience, when you were acting from alignment, you will have a whole new experience. You are going to see things start to work out, and when things don’t work out, then you have this faith that they didn’t work out because there is something that is better or it wasn’t the right time. My first business, I wasn’t in alignment. I didn’t know who I was. I had to have my first business fail essentially for me to go all along a path to find who I was and start the second business where I can and able to take this aligned action.

The truth of the matter is in my experience, most of us haven’t done that deep work to find out who we are. We don’t know ourselves. We take more time getting to know other people, so finding yourself then getting aligned, then taking the right actions. You have given us a ton of value and I know that people will resonate with you. How can people connect with you, Rachael?
