My guest is Julia Wojnar. She’s the Founder of Unleash Your Presence where she helps professionals develop resilience, speaking and communication skills to tackle tough decisions and express their ideas clearly and confidently. She has owned her own speaking skills with many years of experience on stage speaking and performing, in addition to her formal training in Communications from Ithaca College. How did your path lead you to found Unleash Your Presence?

I teach people about building resilience. My own story of entrepreneurship started out of being let go from a job, which it turns out was a great thing for me because it allowed me to stop and reflect on what I truly wanted out of life. For a lot of us, I know for me certainly, freedom is a big core value of mine and that was something that I was looking for more of in my life. Through being let go from my previous job, I realized that entrepreneurship was a better path for me to achieve that freedom in my life. That was where Unleash Your Presence started.

Freedom is one of my core values. I truly believe that when we get on a path and we end being a wage slave, we open up our freedom with our ability to make money and be paid what we’re worth. Why is it that you think professionals are having trouble sharing their ideas and communicating? Is it the spoken word or does it go beyond that?

These days, I would say that beyond just the spoken word, I work with professionals a lot around their general communication skills. It’s one of those areas that no matter what role you may be in either in a company or if you’re working for yourself, there’s always an element of communication involved. Now, it’s more important than ever because as technology evolves, we have to communicate so much in different ways. In a way, one of my favorite topics that I teach and work with clients on is interpersonal communications. Sometimes with technology, folks tend to forget that on the other end of a computer screen is an actual human being. Sometimes, the tone or the message that they’re trying to get across isn’t always received in a way that they’d like. I like to remind people that remembering that and remembering to take into account how the recipient will receive their message is important.

I have a friend that whenever my friend texts me, you can’t tell the tone of voice. I can’t tell, “Is he making a joke? Is he being serious?” I have said to him on numerous occasions, “If you’re going to text me something that cryptic, pick up the phone because I can misinterpret it.” I had an email from a family member that was super long. I’m a speed reader and I responded with nine words. They’re like, “Are you mad at me?” I’m like, “Mad at you? Why would you say that?” They said, “You only responded with a short sentence.” I said, “I get 3,000 emails a day and I got to the point and lasered it.” This is important. With all the technology that goes on now, how do we express what we need to express? Is there a difference between verbally expressing that to one person versus standing on a stage in front of ten people or even 10,000 people?

There are subtle nuances to it for sure. When you are delivering a message in front of a group, especially the more people you have in an audience. For instance, if you’re giving a big speech at a conference versus addressing a smaller group, that intimacy level is not going to be quite as strong. One thing I learned from my years of performing and being on stages in front of hundreds of people at a time. I was always taught to think about the people who are all the way in the back and are seeing you like this little person onstage. They won’t necessarily receive the message the same as the person in the front. As a performer or even as a speaker in the case of a conference, the way that you can get around that is to be a little bit more expressive than you might be in your everyday life. Talking one-on-one to someone or even to a small group and using gestures and more expressive movement can help to reach those people who are all the way in the back of a theater or an auditorium.

Can you tell us a few of the mistakes that we might be making in our communication? Maybe we’re not getting our point across. Maybe people don’t understand our marketing message. They don’t even understand what the benefits are of our businesses.

One issue that I’ve found to come up repeatedly with the clients that I’ve worked with is this concept of clarifying your big idea. Whether you’re giving a speech or delivering a marketing message, any communication that we’re doing, it all boils down to one core message that we’re trying to get across. What I often find when I start working with clients is that they are often full of lots of ideas and they want to talk about them all. I find that this tends to be even more the case when you have professionals that have been in the profession for a long time or have deep knowledge in their topic. Is that because they know so much, they want to cover everything they know at once. Your audience can walk away with remembering one thing about your message. What would you like that to be? That’s the way that I bring it all together because when we think about that core takeaway, it helps us to consider what’s important to be included there and then what extra detail that will take us off track is.

I asked somebody, “Tell me a little bit about your spa.” I met a person who owned a spa and he wanted some help in his business. I received about a fifteen-minute answer that was literally all over the place. I didn’t walk away thinking, “He owns a distinct spa that has a great competitive advantage and I want to go there,” and I told him that. I said, “You told me 50 million things and about twelve different treatments. By the time we were done, if I was a prospective client family member, I would have been too confused by it. As someone who wants to help market you, I don’t know what the message is.” How do people get the ability to communicate more clearly and more confidently, which is what you said you can help people do?

That first part of it is getting clear on what that big idea is. What I do when I’m working with clients specifically around their message is teaching them different frameworks to think about how to deliver that message. These frameworks are methods that have been used in popular speeches all the way back to ancient Greece. They were used in philosophy and continue to be used to this day. They’re proven ways to organize that message so that you can be sure that what you’re saying is getting across what you want the audience to take in. Helping them organize it in their mind so they’re not getting confused by the various points you’re making.

Do most people engage you because they want to go give a speech? What is the number one reason someone would engage you?

At the beginning of starting Unleash Your Presence, that was where I started with helping folks with developing their talks and delivering them for conferences because my background was mainly in speaking and in communications. Now, I find that beyond working with professionals, this piece of interpersonal communications with teens is a big issue. Often, in an organization, especially as organizations grow to bigger sizes, you have your leadership team with the vision is trying to communicate that down the line. I often find, especially with larger organizations, if the messaging isn’t clear and that vision isn’t communicated clearly, employees down the line and those teams will be confused on what their priorities are. Therefore, they’re confused on how best to go about what needs to be done to achieve that vision. I find that these days a lot of my work revolves around helping everyone get on the same page when it comes to their messaging. Helping leadership to communicate their vision appropriately to the rest of their employees so that everyone knows that it’s clear on what needs to be done and what direction the company is going.
