HPR 18 | Life Should Be Fun

Life can be quite a ride sometimes and it is not often fun. Yet, John McGrail believes otherwise. For him, life should be fun. He discusses the philosophy about why it is so, bringing up some reflections on how our state of mind affects our overall well-being. Connecting that to business, if you love what you do, everything works out. Not everything has to be gained by pain all the time. You can find that life becomes more bearable and even more fulfilling if you look at it in a more positive light.

Why Life Should Be Fun with John McGrail

I have someone who teaches something that is simple and yet profound, which is why I invited him to be a guest. His name is Dr. John McGrail. He’s a renowned clinical hypnotherapist. He’s a self-improvement expert and spirituality teacher who promotes and teaches a simple precept, “Life is supposed to be fun.” As Heartrepreneurs, we all know that. Yet we know sometimes it’s not quite right yet. That’s why I have him here. He has helped thousands of clients and students from all walks of life find their fun. He does this in his clinical practice and through self-improvement and motivational seminars and workshops.

He has a book-exclusive synthesis approach that integrates science and spirituality so that you get personal growth and transformation, the things we all want in our lives, physical, emotional, and spiritual balance. He is a featured expert. He has had his writing featured in major print publications like Time, Reader’s Digest, U.S. News & World Report, Cosmo, Redbook, Chicago Tribune, and Huffington Post. He’s a frequent radio and TV guest. We’ll get him to talk about his book, The Synthesis Effect: Your Direct Path to Personal Power and Transformation. Welcome to Heartrepreneur Radio.

Thank you so much. I’m delighted to be with you.

I’m delighted to have you. I found you online and I’ve stalked you for a while. I said, “I want to have you.” The whole philosophy that I believe so strongly is life is supposed to be fun. Let’s talk a little bit about how you resonated with that, came up with that, and then your approach.

I’m not sure I came up with that slogan. I may have learned it along the way in my studies. What it means essentially is not an endless series of hedonistic parties and a big old bash. What it means is that when your life is working the way you want it to, when you have physical, emotional, and spiritual balance working for you, then when you get up in the morning, you look forward to the day. You like the choices you’re making. You like the way you’re treating yourself, first and foremost. You like the relationships you have.

People were taught to suffer. It’s no pain, no gain. It’s not supposed to be that way. Click To Tweet

Hopefully, you love what you do to earn money. Most of us have to earn money. That’s the nature of our society. When all of that’s working, when you get up in the morning, you look forward to the day. You like the people you’re hanging out with and relating to. You like what you do for a living. It creates this enormous feeling of well-being. That’s what it’s supposed to be about. People were taught to suffer. No pain, no gain. I don’t know where that came from, but it’s not supposed to be that way.

I couldn’t agree with you more on that. No pain, no gain has always bugged me. The first book that I wrote is Work Yourself Happy because I was living a miserable life. I didn’t understand the whole concept that life is supposed to be fun. Unless I was doing what I love to do, it wasn’t fun.

I had a similar experience in my earlier careers. I’ve had several careers, most of them I’ve enjoyed. I was in a similar place. I see this over and over again with my clients. People who are trying to live up to the expectations of others, whether they are family, societal mores, or another big popular term, memes. They’re miserable because they’re not being true to themselves but when you live your life in a way that you want to live it. My favorite quote, and it’s the first one in my book, Christopher Morley, “There is only one success, to live your life in your own way.” When you do that, it’s amazing how things flow. How you begin to manifest in every way possible. That’s what it’s all about. That’s what my synthesis process is all about.

Please talk a little bit about your synthesis process.

It came from my terror at trying to find a topic for my dissertation. At the end of my PhD studies, I’ve done all these research papers and now it’s time to do something original, which is what the PhD process is all about. I’m thinking to myself, “What do I possibly have to contribute to the field of human behavior?” Human beings have been what they are being for 300,000 years. What am I going to add to this? I was terrified because I couldn’t come up with anything. Call it Divine Providence or whatever, I had this inspiration. I said, “You have over a thousand case files in front of you in your archives. I realized that most of my clients do really well. Some of them do okay. There are a few, fortunately only a few or I wouldn’t be in business, that don’t do well.

I said, “Let’s see if we can find the common denominators for those folks who excel and get through the process quickly, those who do okay and those who don’t.” What are the differences? In reviewing those over a thousand case files, the certain elements seem to come forward over and over again. What I realized essentially is that Western thinking is impuristic, “I’ll believe it when I see it. Show me proof.” That’s how we’re taught to think, when you balance that with what we might call more indigenous or Eastern thinking, which is exactly the opposite, “I’ll believe in order to see.” You use tools like hypnosis, which is just a tool. It’s a state of consciousness, meditation, and a variety of other models that I then began to put together. When you bring them all together, integrating your conscious mind, your cognitive thinking, and your logical thinking with your much more powerful and subtle subconscious, spiritual mind, that’s when things really begin to cook. That was the common denominator, which was the birth of synthesis.

The Synthesis Effect: Your Direct Path to Personal Power and Transformation

What can we get if we pick up your book, The Synthesis Effect? What will that do for us? Who should be picking it up and reading it?

I’d like to say everybody but there is no silver bullet. It was written for anybody who feels stuck in virtually any area of your life. It doesn’t matter because of the common denominator of being stuck, whether it’s emotionally, physically, or spiritually. Whether it’s relationships or career, or you have a fear, phobia or an unwanted or unhealthy habit. It doesn’t matter. The essence behind all of that is common. What the book does is it explains to the reader how and why we get in these pickles, “How do I get this way?” Most of my clients, if I say, “How did this happen?” “I don’t know. I’ve been this way as long as I can remember.” What I do is I take them through the process of understanding how our mind works. How we become programmed in our positive and negative patterns. Once you get that, you say, “It’s not my fault even though I did it.”

The book provides a set of tools to use to change that, and then a process through which to use the tool. It’s three parts. Create understanding, present the tools and techniques, and here’s how to use them. What happens along the way from the first page, the reader begins to do the process of synthesis themselves. By the time you get to the end of the book, you are well on your way. You are synthesizing a life that you feel is fun. That’s how it was designed. I’m gratified to say that you have an intention when you write a book, as you well know. What you want it to do, but the proof is in the pudding. Fortunately, the reviews from readers, both on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and I get emails still all the time. I got lucky. It works.

How can people get the book? Where can they go to get the book?

It is available online on Amazon and, both in paperback and for e-readers. It’s not in stores anymore until the second printing. It will come back in bookstores, which unfortunately to my dismay, becoming obsolete. For those who prefer to read it in Chinese, there is a version that is published in Mainland China. It’s completely in Chinese, and also in Malaysia, which is in English. My first international edition was Mainland China and I was blown away. You can look it up, The Synthesis Effect or just my name Dr. John McGrail. It’ll take you to it. I have a synthesis challenge, Terri. I challenge everybody.

I hope the readers will take advantage of this. If you buy the book, you read it and do the process exactly the way it’s laid out, it is not hard. It takes commitment to yourself. If after 30 days you don’t feel a change in your life, you send me proof of purchase and I’ll refund your money. I have had yet not one reader ask me for their money back yet. I don’t mean to brag. Like I said, I got lucky. I don’t know what guided me in it. I sometimes reread parts of it and I can’t even believe I wrote it. It was one of those incredible moments and it seems to work. That’s the synthesis challenge and I hope everybody takes me up on it. I’m confident that you’ll feel better. You’ll have some powerful tools.

There is only one success: to live your life in your own way. Click To Tweet

I want to thank you so much for being here on Heartrepreneur Radio. You have added tons of value. Is there any other way that people can connect with you?

Thank you so much again for inviting me. I’m delighted. You’re a tremendous host and I love your work. I can be reached through either of my two websites, For people who are more interested in the hypnotherapy part of my practice, I have another website that’s more practice-centric. There’s tons of information. I’ve got a video series. If you go to my YouTube channel John McGrail, a weekly series called A Better You In A Minute Or Two. A Better You is the name of my company. If anybody emails me or calls me, my numbers are there and my email addresses are on the website, you will get a personal response. I personally respond to every single inquiry. I don’t have my “people” do it. If anybody has questions about the process or they have questions about finding professional help if they need it. Sometimes a book is not enough. I’m happy to provide that free.

I’ve gotten your book and I’m going to take the challenge. I suggest that all my fellow Heartrepreneurs do the same. This has been a stellar interview. I know you’re busy. I don’t want to take all day. Thank you so much for joining us here at Heartrepreneur Radio.

Thank you again, Terri. It’s been a delight.
