It’s great to be here, Sam. Thank you for having me.
We were looking at underlying fears that run us in our business and personal life. Can you shed some light on that?
Anybody who’s trying to run a business knows that what goes into the businesses is everything that’s who we are. If there are underlying fears about who we are, that automatically bleeds through into our business. My specialty is focusing on these underlying fears, these unconscious fears that stay deep within us. For people who are spiritual entrepreneurs, fears associated with acceptance, with being taken seriously, with like, “Are people going to connect with my message? Am I going to be able to make the change in the world that I want to make?” those fears are very real. Often, there’s a whole range of blockers that are associated with those that hold us back from the success that we not only believe we deserve but the success we want because ultimately our goal is to help others. It's only through conscious awareness or a conscious connected choice that we can start to make a difference in our lives. Let’s say we have one of those fears or we recognize that we have one, what do we do then?
I run a bit of a three-stage process called Recognize, Reflect and Resolve. I tried to keep everything as simple as possible because simple is easy to remember and easy to implement. It’s the consistent application of something that helps us change our behavioral habits. The Recognize, Reflect and Resolve process is all about recognizing what’s going on. For a lot of people, this is the hardest step because we often don’t understand. A lot of our fears are happening at that unconscious level. Our ego sits in that dark halls of our unconsciousness and constantly talks trash in our ear. Our ego’s job is to keep us disconnected. If we are running a spiritual business or we’re running a heart-centered business, we don’t want our ego involved because the ego is all about disconnection and heart-centered business needs to be connected.
That’s usually one place we can go in regards to recognizing what’s going on within us. Partly, it’s also about recognizing the fears that we have associated with what is happening. We want to reflect on what do we want instead. This sounds very simple, but when practically applied over and over again, it does implement some fabulous change. After recognizing what’s going on within us and being very honest with ourselves about that, we then need to reflect on what we want instead. Part of that reflection is trying to understand what are the actions that can be taken to implement what we want. When we get to the resolve stage, we can take action by implementing those particular key steps. I understand it’s very simple, but I promise you it works.
I think what you’re saying is we need to bring presence to some of these patterns that we’re running. I was speaking at an event and I said, “Most of the decisions that you’ve made were decided before the age of seven. We’re busy running these patterns, but everyone else sees them except us.”
In a lot of ways, that is correct. What you’re talking about is what I refer to as out of date belief systems. We develop these belief systems first when we’re a young child based on our parents. When we get through our teenagers, we base it mostly on our peers and our siblings, for instance, with a bit of parental influence. We get into our adult lives and we’re basing it on people that we work with and people that influence us and all that sort of stuff. The problem is for a lot of us, those fears go on and those old belief systems become out of date because they don’t get checked in on for 20 to 30 something years until we start to experience what is more commonly referred to as a midlife crisis. Ultimately, my work centers around bringing conscious awareness to that unconsciousness that’s going on within us because it’s that unconsciousness that’s running our life. When we bring consciousness towards it, we can start to take control back on their life.
Andrew, your first step is recognize. I feel like sometimes, especially in my life and with some of the people I’ve worked with, we’re not even ready to recognize or we know something’s wrong, but we don’t know what. How do you maybe fine-tune that step? I think many people know they’re unhappy, not fulfilled or not connected that they have no idea why.
This is one of the reasons why I put so much content out there into the world through my daily inspirations on Facebook and Instagram. We’re all doing this, but the whole point of that is to constantly be subtly reminding people about, “Maybe you should think about this. Maybe you should think about that.” It’s the reason why I write the books that I do, in the hope that people will connect with them too. It’s through these subtle little reminders that we get that we suddenly start to bring that consciousness back to that moment and have a think about it. I have no desire or demand to feed anybody’s truth to become my truth, for them to accept everything that I’m saying.
What I’m trying to do is to offer a different perspective because we can learn different perspectives from all sorts of things, from shows like this, for instance. The subtle little things that remind us, “That’s what I need to come back to that moment. I need to think about this. I had that thing to do.” It’s the same in trying to understand these simple moments. Statistics are telling us, those figures are anywhere between 80% to 95% across the world of people living their daily lives completely unconsciously. It’s only through conscious awareness or what I refer to as a conscious connected choice that we can start to make a difference in our lives. If we’re a heart-based entrepreneur, it helps us make a difference in other people’s lives as well. Our fears are created based on our past experience bleeding through into our future. Click To Tweet
We do need reminders because it’s easy to get onto autopilot and say, “I’ve got this huge to-do list. I’ve got all this stuff I want to do for me personally. I’ve got all this stuff I want to do for my family and go into full go mode without even realizing what’s the best way to navigate through all that.”
That’s very common too. The moment we wake up in the morning, we’re focused on, “Are the things going to be okay today? Am I going to get through my day? Am I going to be able to feed my kids? Am I going to be liked by other people? Is what I’m wearing going to be accepted?” All of these things play out with high levels of debt across the world, employment uncertainty, even terrorism, all these things create these layers of fear that if left unchecked and more to the point allowed to remain unconscious, they eventually build up. Suddenly, we end up with an anxiety disorder or an epidemic of depression. Suddenly, we’re medicating and everything to try and deal with all of these issues that I believe can be dealt with at that ground core construct level.
If we had those real connections, real acceptance and real healthy food, I don’t think medication would be that necessary. You said something about people going on with these patterns. One of the ways to break it is to have these reminders such as the content you’re putting out. What is another way to maybe break out of that pattern or realize you’re in a pattern?
A lot of people that I speak to don’t even know that they are caught in this constant cycle. I call it the daily drum. They literally get up, they get dressed, have breakfast, go to work, come home. There’s a bit of a community in between there as well, and it’s go. What do I talk to people is about changing our physical pattern. Get out and go for a walk in nature. If you are into swimming, go for a swim or something like that. Try and get a little bit of light exercise. Go for a walk with your partner. I love walking because walking does not only help recharge and recenter the body, but I love walking with my partner, Michelle. We conspire and we come up with all of these crazy ideas. We connect that way as well. It is through the connection that helps us break these patterns.
Grab a board game and play board games with your kids. I love doing that. My kids love it too. Switch off the television for a minute and get out some cards or have a conversation. Instead of watching TV while you’re eating the meal, have a chat while you have that meal together. These simple little things that I know all sound a little old fashioned, but there was a reason why people in the past were happy. The vast majority of the population nowadays and the world is struggling with finding that level of happiness. We’re distracted all the time. We need to put our phones down and we need to listen. We need to have these conversations. We need to connect. Even picking up a book can be a fabulous way of breaking that cycle because not a lot of us sit there and physically read something that is either entertaining or informative to us as well.
What you’re advocating is some relaxed play and that’s when the ideas start generating. For me, my best place for ideas is in the car. I love a long drive where all I’m focused on is the road and what’s going on and all of a sudden, I get some of my best inspiring well-known ideas that I’ve shown up in my head.
I’m exactly the same with the car because I do a lot of driving. The other thing is in the shower. The reason being is when you’re in the shower, you are present. You are there. You need hot water. The routine that you’ve got to go in to cleanse and all that stuff. It’s important that that presence is allowed to happen. The problem is when we’re unconscious and we’re running on this treadmill or day-to-day with the commute, work and all the rest of it, kids and school, we forget to remain present. We’re constantly thinking ahead. When we’re in that moment, when the ego has our control of us and disconnecting us, our fears are created based on our past experience bleeding through into our future. There’s no presence involved in that. That’s what we need to do. We need to come back to the now like our good friend Eckhart Tolle says, “In the now there are no problems.” Ultimately speaking, I know that to be true in everything that I teach people as well.
