I have asked my guest to come on because when I saw what her topic was, I thought, “This is so perfect,” and I’ll tell you why. Her name is Irene Gabelnick. She’s an author, a blogger and this is what really attracted me, she’s the Founder of Fit for Sanity. I thought those words were so great. I had to reach out, “I need you to come on the show.” She does a monthly health and fitness newsletter and it’s focused on busy moms, Fit for Sanity. Irene says, “We all know life can be a little bit crazy and yes, we certainly do.” I asked her to come here and I asked Irene to talk to us about reducing stress through healthy eating and exercise. Every one of us as a Heartrepreneur, as a business owner, we need to do that. Irene, welcome. Good to have you on the Heartrepreneur Radio.
Terri, thank you so much. I’m so glad to be here.
I will tell you when I saw Fit for Sanity, it just resonated with me because it’s so funny. We’re talking about life can be a little bit crazy. I was just sharing with somebody, normally my life seems even keel. Then all of a sudden, I have all these projects and all these deadlines and I feel stressed, which I normally don’t feel. I noticed myself several times walk into my kitchen and I’m like, “What am I doing in here?” First of all, how did you get interested in healthy eating and exercise? How did this come to be?
It’s really been ingrained with me most of my life. I think I really started about ten years ago, getting serious about it when I had my second child and it took me a lot longer to lose the baby weight. I did become a vegetarian at that time and it’s something I’ve done on and off over the years. It’s something that I started to really read about it, learn about it, I started exercising. I was in the best shape of my life on my 40th birthday. I was really proud of that. Hoping to say the same for 50, but it’s really just been ingrained with me and I’ve done it out of a means for survival because when you feel good and you look good and feel good about yourself, I really believe that it changes your whole attitude on life.
I was just going to say to you, that really resonates with me and I’ll tell you why. I have gone through ups and downs of weight in my life because sometimes I see photos and I’m like, “Is that me?” It has tied in with what’s going on in the course of my life. When I was very stressed in corporate America, I’d gain tons of weight. When I got happy at work, the weight came off. When I lost my mom and I was really thin, all of a sudden, I was really heavy. This is really resonating different weights and different eating patterns.
I think that most people can say that their weight fluctuates through life, especially with having children and for different reasons. That’s really one of the reasons I wanted to help other busy entrepreneurs like us and other busy moms. Just share everything that I learned to just help other people live a happier, healthier and saner life because life can be a little bit crazy. I’ve really done it out of survival. I’ve developed, without even thinking, ways to squeeze exercising even on the busiest days, whether it’s getting up early in the morning or just squeezing in an extra ten minutes of core out just in between I have something cooking in the oven. I’ll run and just throw in a quick video or turn on YouTube and do a ten-minute core video or something like that. There are just a lot of different ways that I share with you and with my audience is how to squeeze in exercise on the busiest days.
I have almost every day wake up in the morning and the first thing I do is I work out and I just love it. I go for a walk. I just love it. This week is really a chaotic week and I’m sitting here with you happily doing our interview going, “I never got to work out today and I still have five more appointments. It’s not going to happen.” Tell me how I can make this work. I’m so excited.
That happens to me way too often and yes, there’s nothing better than getting up and getting that workout first thing in the morning, but it just doesn’t always happen. Sometimes we’ll be cleaning up after dinner and we put on music, we call it our dance party, and we just start dancing in the kitchen as we’re cleaning up. We’re singing and we’re dancing and every time you just move your body a little bit, you’re burning calories.
Another way too, and I do this especially on vacation because when you’re in Jamaica or Hawaii, things are just going a little bit more slowly and there’s just no excuse not to take the stairs. Even if I’m on the fourth floor, I take the stairs. If I’m walking into an appointment and I have a few extra minutes, then I will take the stairs. Also, in every way you’ve heard this, but how often do we do it, because we’re always rushing but if you’re going to the grocery store, park far away from the door so that you have to walk a little bit more. Every little bit really counts.
I do just what you’re saying, Irene. I take the stairs whenever I can and try to move, but I did notice like I’ve been sitting, I’ve been in front of computers, I’ve been working. Wouldn’t it be great if one of my times of standing up and getting something if I dance around for a few minutes? What else can we do?
There’s another tip for you too when you’re sitting. Oftentimes, and I haven’t done this in a while. I’m a writer, so I do a lot of writing. Sometimes I sit on my balance ball or my yoga ball and I will actually sit there. It works. It does. You can do back crunches, even if you’re just sitting in the chair. Or if I’m driving a lot, if I’m running a lot of errands or even on a road trip, I’ll actually sit in and do five squeezes and back crunches.
What else can we do stress wise and how can we make sure we’re getting healthy foods in our body, especially if we’re under stress or we’re traveling or colleagues. There are so many things that happen. How do we eat healthy all the time?
It’s hard to do all the time but if you can do it most of the time, then I think that you’re doing great. A couple of things that we do is I will make a pot of healthy, hearty, homemade noodle soup. It’s my favorite vegetable soup and the recipe is on my website on IreneGabelnick.com. What I’ll do is I make a big pot of soup, it doesn’t have to be on a Sunday or whatever and it’s pretty quick and easy. It’s mostly just delicious herbs, fresh herbs that is vegan. However, you can either add protein if you want a high protein soup by putting beans in it, but the kids make me keep them on the side.
One of my daughters likes noodles. If I’m feeling I need a little extra carbs that day, I’ll throw some noodles in but we always keep the noodles on the side so that you will have the option. What I do is I freeze half of it and that soup is great. If you’ve got to just drop a couple of quick pounds, I’ll make a pile of this soup and I’ll eat it for lunch every day that we can most days. It’s just so quick and easy to grab a little bowl and heat it up and I’ll freeze half of it.
I do also give some freezing tips so that it tastes almost as good as it does the first day, if not better. If I know it’s going to be a really crazy day like you have all these late appointments. You probably don’t have a lot of time to cook. It’s one of those days where you’re figuring, I’m just going to order pizza. Instead, if you know you have a busy day, you can pull it out the night before or the day before, let it thaw overnight in the fridge and then all you have to do is quickly heat it up and now you have a healthy dinner and you saved money.
I’ve got some healthy eating ideas. I’ve definitely got some moving my body ideas. Let’s go on to what do I do with stress?
When you exercise and you eat healthy, you feel better. It reduces stress. It’s a natural stress reliever. Let’s say I’m picking up the kids from school and somebody cuts me off. If I don’t feel good, I’m a little bit grumpy, I might react differently. I might say something harsh but if I feel good, I might just think, “It’s all right, you go ahead, maybe they’re rushing to the hospital.” My whole attitude is different and then in itself is a stress reliever. I really just find that if I even get just a quick ten-minute run in and obviously it’s not ideal, but just that ten minutes of fresh air, that getting my heart pumping or dancing, putting on some music, it just relieves stress. I’m ready to conquer the world, I feel so much better. People say, I don’t have time, I don’t have time and so they skip it all together. I just think that that is the absolute wrong thing to do because even if it’s only five minutes, ten minutes or fifteen minutes, that stress relief is so worth it to make that time.
What made you sit down one day and come up with this health and fitness newsletter? How did you come up with Fit for Sanity? How did that all come to be?
I own several websites. I decided about a year ago, I did realtor for nine years and I don’t want clients and other people to be in control of my income and my time and my life. I decided that I wanted to own my own business and I want to help other people. I did a lot of reading, a lot of soul searching and what I found is they say you have to find something you’re passionate about. I have been passionate about health and fitness since I ran cross country in high school. This is something that’s ingrained in me. It’s my whole life. If you wake up every morning and you’re doing something you’re passionate about, then you’re going to wake up happy.
The Fit for Sanity, there’s a two-part thing there. I bought a lot of different websites because I’m creating some other websites as well. It’s hard to find one that isn’t taken, a good one. I am coming out with a few different books, one will be on health and nutrition, one is going to be a healthy recipe book. I’m also going to share my story. I don’t know when this is going to be released because I’m spending a lot of time on it because it’s really important to me. It’s my story about growing up with a bipolar parent. Sanity is not something I take lightly. It’s all going to tie in when my book is released, but I really feel that I deserve the right to use sanity to help others.
