BHAG: Big Hairy Audacious Goal

In the book, “Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies” by James Collins and Jerry Porras they talk about having a BHAG. A BHAG  is a long-term goal that actually shifts how you do business and that allows you to grow your business because instead of focusing on short-term and long-term goals, like most business owners do, you have a BHAG which takes about 10- to 30 years to achieve.

As a business owner, you need to have a BHAG and the time to create yours is right now.

To begin with, really think about a goal that is HUGE and seems almost unattainable. It is funny because as I am writing this article I wanted to not use the word goal. I looked up “goal synonym” in the Thesaurus hoping to find a better word for goal only to find that goal was the right word.

You need to discover what it is that is important enough for you to take years dedicating your business growth to achieve.  This BHAG must compel you and excite you to take action to achieve this goal.  In my business here at Heartrepreneur LLC, our big hairy audacious goal is to impact 100,000 business owners worldwide to join the Heart-repreneur® cause to change the way business is done forever.  I like the word audacious from BHAG and was curious if the way I define audacious fits according to the dictionary.  I found it fit exactly.  The dictionary says, “showing a willingness to take surprisingly bold risks”. Yep, that is a match! While I was there I was curious about the what the dictionary had to say for goal definition and it says, the object of a person’s ambition or effort; an aim or desired result.”  Bingo, another match.


Now that you have a BHAG and are certain it is truly long-term, I want you to share it with others.  Be certain you have passion and excitement for this goal. When you share it you are checking to see if it gains momentum and enthusiasm and if others want to get on board with you so that it becomes a movement or a cause.

The next step is to commit to your BHAG.  I have my client family members break this into yearly actionable goals, quarterly actionable goals, monthly and weekly and daily actionable goals and set-up weekly progress checks so they are certain they are moving to their goals all the time.


If you go about your business without a big hairy audacious goal, you will have less excitement and motivation to get up and get going.
