Hi, it’s Dr. Terri Levine, welcome back. I am delighted to have you here at Live Well, Earn Well. Now, I know money is important. We all know that money is important. However, there’s something that’s more important than money, and it’s actually the deep understanding of why you do what it is you do. Super successful coaches and consultants, and really, all small business owners have one thing in common. It’s not experience, it’s not any kind of magical skill, it’s not even that they have a powerful drive.
All of those things certainly can definitely help grow your business, they’re not prerequisites for success. It might be surprising, even though you might have a lot of skill or experience, sometimes you can still lack drive. And you can lack drive, skill, and experience and be successful. How? Well, there’s one word, and that is your ‘why.’ Why did you decide to become a coach, or consultant, or whatever your business is? Why do you spend too many hours in front of your computer each week?
I know you do, I’ve been watching you. Why do you stay up late? Why do you get up early? Why are you constantly thinking, and working, and growing your business? It is that ‘why’ that ultimately drives you, me to success. Here’s the thing, the ‘why’ is different for everyone. Your ‘why’ is not my ‘why,’ my ‘why’ is not your ‘why.’ It’s a deeply personal choice, and it needs to be something that actually has a heck of a lot of meaning. For example, let’s take a survivor of domestic abuse, they might be happy to spend 60, maybe even 70, hours a week mentoring other victims.
Maybe they’re counseling couples, maybe they’re trying to break the cycle. And that person would have a very strong desire to help other women and prevent them from going through what they had gone through. That would be that person’s ‘why.’ A mother of small children might be saddened at the thought of having to send their kids off to daycare so that she can go back to work, even though it might not make a big difference in the paycheck by the time you pay for daycare. However, that mother might have a ‘why,’ which is to spend a lot of time with her kids while still supporting her family.
Let’s say you’re a young, fresh-out-of-school entrepreneur, and I admire that. And you might be resistant to the same path that your parents took if they had a J-O-B, working for a corporation for 40 years, retiring, finding themselves with barely enough money to live on. Instead, if this is you, maybe you dream of the income at the time to see the world where you’re young and where you can go enjoy it. So, now I ask you, what is your big ‘why?’ It might be freedom to travel. It might be to spend time with your family.
It might be the ability to take weeks off at a time. Or it might be the ability to care for your parents or sick family member. Or even to earn money so that you can give money away to a charity that’s very close to your heart. Whatever your ‘why’ is, it needs to be the driving force behind every action that you take. So, when you’re deciding whether or not to take on a new client, you’ll ask, “Is this client aligned with my ‘why’?” When you’re setting goals for yourself, you’re going to say, “Do those goals move me closer to my big ‘why’?”
When you’re thinking of branching out to a new business venture, go and check your ‘why.’ Make sure your why is in alignment with your big ‘why,’ and suddenly everything is more attainable. I am truly here to help you. So, if you want to have a conversation, just join the Facebook group, which is heartrepreneurswithTerriLevine, and you can actually have conversation with me there.
