Hey there, welcome to Live Well, Earn Well. I’m Dr. Terri, and today we’re going to talk a bit about creating a life in business that thrives. And I’m really excited. So, welcome to this episode of Live Well and Earn Well. I am really glad that you’re here today because whether you’re walking the dog, sipping your morning coffee, or, I don’t know, maybe taking a couple of minutes out of meetings, you’re just spending time here with me, and this time is really about you.
It’s about you. It’s about your dreams. It’s about your goals, and it’s about your power to actually create the life that you’re choosing so that you can live well and earn well by design. So, let’s talk about how to make that happen, and I’m going to start with two words: Life plan. I guess that’s one kind of word. Business plan. That’s another kind of word. I’m calling that two words. You see, we often separate our life plan and our business plan, don’t we? Have you done that? So, we build these ambitious business plans, and what we forget is time to actually enjoy life.
And maybe you’ve done that. Or you design an incredible life and it’s not aligned with the kind of work that you’re doing to build those dreams. So, here’s the truth. Most successful people that I know, they build both together, and they do it in harmony. So, we’re going to talk about, foundationally, building your life plan first. We have to start with your life plan because the life plan is the foundation of every single thing that you do. So, you need to take a moment if you’re not driving, close your eyes, and I want you to start to imagine the life that you are actually dreaming of. Really get in there and visualize it.
Where are you? What are you wearing? Who’s with you? How are you spending your time? For me, it’s always been about family, purpose, and balance. I want you to get crystal clear on what truly matters to you because when you know your values, you can make decisions that align with them very quickly and easily. Let me give you a simple exercise. Write down five things that matter most in your life. I don’t know what that is for you. Maybe it’s freedom, family, health, adventure. Maybe it’s legacy. It doesn’t matter. And then ask yourself, and be real honest with yourself, is the way that I’m currently living, reflecting those values?
If not, that’s okay. Don’t beat yourself up. You’ve already taken the first step, and that’s recognizing that you’re out of alignment. Let’s go to the second step. The second step is actually making a plan. And we’re going to talk about making a plan, which I’m going to call your business plan because that is the engine for your dream life. Let me explain that to you. Your business plan and your business actually fuels your ability to live the life that you truly want. So, if you’re a coach, if you’re a consultant, any service professional, let me tell you, the key to a thriving business isn’t working harder.
You’ve heard it, it’s working smarter. So let me tell you what that actually looks like because people go, “Working smarter,” and don’t tell you what it looks like. Step number one is clarity in your mission. What is the one problem that you solve? One. Don’t tell me, “I help people blah, blah, blah, blah.” One. Your success actually lies in your ability to serve as a coach or a consultant. So, you have to be laser-focused on who you serve. That’s number one. And number two is the transformation that you provide. The second step of designing your business plan are having systems that support you.
You can’t do it all alone. You shouldn’t even try, not even from day one. Automate where you can, delegate anything that doesn’t need your unique touch or isn’t in your zone of genius, and always make room for your genius to shine. The third step of this plan is having your unique voice. Listen, it’s a crowded market out there for coaches and consultants, don’t try to copy what everyone else is doing. Don’t fall into that trap, it doesn’t work. Be bold. Be authentic. People are drawn to you because you have a unique style, unique story, unique voice, and a unique perspective.
The fourth step of this plan is income with impact. Your business isn’t just about making money, it’s about making a difference. And when you focus on creating real value for your clients, the income follows. Let’s talk for a moment about aligning life and business. And here is where the magic happens, when you align your life plan with your business plan. So, I’m going to give you an actual example because this is a brilliant one. According to Michelle Obama, she said when she and Barack were in the White House, life could have been — and I’m kind of reading from her book — easily consumed by the demands of the job, but she said, “We knew what mattered.” Family dinners, time with their girls, and staying connected to each other.
So, they built boundaries. They said no to things that didn’t align with their values, and they stayed committed to showing up for what truly mattered. So, use her example, and I just read that to you, because you can do the same. Schedule time for your family, your health, the things that bring you joy, just like you’d schedule a client appointment. Build your business model around the life you want, not the other way around. So, we’re going to end today with taking action. I know that what you’ve heard might sound like a lot, so I don’t want it to overwhelm you, start very, very small.
Today, I want you to take 15 minutes, that’s all, to work on one thing. Write down the five life values. Think about one way that your business can support your values even better, and then commit to taking action this week, no matter how small. You have the power to build a business that fuels the life that you love. It starts with clarity, and intention, and the courage to really prioritize what truly and deeply matters. So, here’s my challenge to you; dream big, start small, and then keep going because the life that you want is waiting for you. You’re capable of making it happen.
