Boosting Your Mindset For Success with Regan Hillyer

I have with me Regan Hillyer. She is from New Zealand. She is an entrepreneur and mindset coach. Regan, welcome.

It’s great to be here.

One thing I noticed was you started your own business. You’re an entrepreneur. You went to seven figures. Tell me a little bit about your journey.

I started in a family that taught me to follow the system and go to school and get good grades. I set off down that path. I knew it wasn’t for me. Early on I jumped into the world of personal development and I started investing left, right and center looking for all of these strategic answers of how I create a life and a business I love. It wasn’t until I started doing the internal work and conditioning myself to succeed and going down that path. That’s when everything started shifting. The biggest thing which accelerated me to seven figures and beyond was the internal work. It was the mindset, it was the energetics. It was 80% of the psychology and the 20% aligned action on the outside.

My family is like, “Become a doctor, a lawyer, engineer, a profession out there. Get a degree then get a higher degree and then get some more education.” What made you decide to shift from that or break free from that traditional mindset of getting a good education, get a good job and then work your butt off the rest of your life?

Just keep driving forward because results speak louder than words. Click To Tweet

I was studying to be an architect at the time because what my dad had always told me is, “Regan, if I had your opportunities, I would have been an architect.” I went down that path and I was sitting in a university lecture theater and a new lecturer came in. He got us to do visualization and visualize our life many years out. As the future architect who was born to be, everyone got inspired and excited and I felt sick to my stomach. It was at that moment I saw a life I was creating because everyone told me I was good at it. Everyone told me I should be doing it, but I knew deep down in my core there was something else out there for me. That’s what spun me off on the path of searching for answers and starting to answer the question, “What is my purpose? How do I create a life I love?” Maybe there’s a better option than a 9 to 5 job. That was the moment that put me in that direction.

Another option besides a 9 to 5 job, you started going into personal development. What were some of these mind shifts you made that helped you get to the seven figures? If you’re working for someone else, you don’t even think seven figures. You’re thinking food on the table and don’t lose your job.

It was a series of small and gradual shifts for me. I didn’t walk out of that lecture theater at university thinking, “I want to be a self-made multimillionaire.” I was asking myself, “How do I do something I love and earn my money? How do I create life or business where I could earn $100,000 a year and be happy and help people and have some free time?” It didn’t start with this grand vision. It started with small stepping stones. I continued to step along the way and my vision and my capacity to expand my vision continued to grow until I got to a place where I started dreaming bigger.

You went to personal development. What were some of the exercises you did? The professor did visualization and you realized this was not your dream. It was someone else’s dream. That made you sick. What were some of the things you did maybe positive to get the life you wanted?

One of the big tools which helped me was journaling. Someone taught me early on I could put pen to paper and start writing out my dreams and write them into reality. I went deep with that tool. I started asking myself every single day, “What is it that I want?” If I was to dream with no limitations, what would be going on in my life in a year, in a few years? I started permitting myself to dream again. From this place, I started looking at, “What’s blocking that? What’s stopping that? Why do I not have that?”

Mindset For Success: Give yourself permission to dream again. If you were to dream with absolutely no limitations, start looking at what’s blocking that.

I started going into the limitations, all of the fears, the doubts, the self-sabotage patterns, the worries and the not feeling good enough. I started purging out and getting real with it and looking at what was under the surface of my internal reality that was blocking it or stopping it. From that place, I started to layer on, “What would the highest version of me do to take aligned action? What would I be doing?” It’s not just about watching the Law of Attraction and The Secret and journaling and meditating and then it all shows up. You have to take action as well. What do I get to do to take action in this world strategically to start creating this in alignment with the dream vision I’m calling in?

It sounds for the first time in your life you made a blueprint architect or mapped out what your life should look like in a few years, one year. That’s critical because before I got into my own business and entrepreneurship, no one ever said, “What is your life plan?” I was busy following the herd. You had some doubts and you had some fears and you purged them out. What are some of the techniques that purged them? Was it the journaling or something else?

Journaling was a big part of this and getting raw and real with it. When I started meeting like-minded people and getting into different environments of other people that wanted to create an amazing life. I also started voicing them, sharing them and being real with things and saying to people, “I want to do this but I feel scared. I would love to create this, but I don’t know how to do it. I don’t feel good enough. I doubt that. I’m asking for too much.” I started getting real with where I was at and something shifted when I started doing that. I started seeing myself nude in the mirror and going, “Here’s what’s happening under the surface.” I knew if I wanted to create my dream life and my dream business and my dream reality, I had to clear stuff out. I voiced it out. I wrote it out. I did whatever I could to get it out of my system so I could shift into this new level of reality.

What I do love about the journaling is there has to be some way to get it out. I tell people to record yourself speaking, write it in a journal. There are many times where I have journaled and I’m surprised at what I wrote down. I was like, “I was never even thinking this. I wasn’t even going down this path.” You broke your family’s mold and you’re doing something different. What does the tribe think of you?

In the beginning, it was challenging. My dad always told me, “You can do anything you want in your life.” When I started doing that, he was worried and very concerned. My mom at the beginning kept saying to me, “Can you go and be an architect? Can you use this degree?” because I did finish my architecture degree, but I never worked a day in my life as an architect. She kept saying, “Go and get a job. It’s going to be easier.” They had a lot of fear. They had a lot of doubt about everything. The fear and doubt were coming from a place of deep love. They wanted me to be safe and supported at the end of the day. It wasn’t until I was able not to let that influence me and be just focused on generating results. The minute the results started kicking in, everything started to be okay. For anyone who’s reading this who has maybe a challenging environment or family or a partner or someone not fully backing you, keep driving forward because results speak louder than words.

The results are also coming from the actions. It’s not just meditation and Law of Attraction. We take those actions. Tell us about one inspired action that made a big difference for you because you were talking about journaling and getting raw with yourself and then taking that inspired action.

There have been many different things and many different actions, many different strategies. One of the biggest things which have made the biggest impact for me was choosing to go online. I started and then created an offline business. I was speaking and running events all through Australia and New Zealand. I created myself a glorified job. I was making money and I was living on purpose, but I was exhausted and bent out all the time. I remember asking myself, “What is the next layer of this reality? What’s the bigger vision here?” The minute I started seeing I wanted to have a freer lifestyle and work from my laptop and travel the world and also help more people, I knew the internet was calling. I walked away from that older business and I chose to start everything online, not having a clue what I was doing. I didn’t know anything about internet marketing or online business or anything. Choosing that and then starting to lay a foundation for that, that’s set up the main company I have now.

Was that scary for you to walk away from a business where you’re running workshops and events in Australia and New Zealand and trying something new?

It was scary. Everyone was telling me I’m screwing it up, that it was the biggest self-sabotage. I was walking away from everything I’d built. What was I doing? I was going crazy. I knew deep down there was more. Even though I’d created success on what many people were saying looking into my life, they were always saying, “Regan, this is good. You’re young. You’re successful. Look what you’ve created. You must be happy.” I doubted myself and I thought, “Why am I not grateful for what I have?” Something was pulling me. There was something bigger. There was something under the surface saying, “You’ve done this, but it’s a stepping stone. There’s the next level.” For anyone reading, listen to those intuitive nudges. Listen to your gut. Listen to those feelings pulling you in that next direction because chances are there’s something far greater, far shinier and beautiful that awaits you on the other side of that fear.

We have heart-centered business owners and you are giving from the heart. Why is that important to you? You talked about giving back and making a difference. How is that value instilled in you? What’s important about that in your business?

HPR 168 | Mindset For Success
Mindset For Success: You absolutely can have it all in your life no matter what that looks like, no matter how far away it might seem, no matter how big it might appear.

I believe it’s everything. You can join the dots and make some money for the sake of making money. I promise you it will leave you feeling empty and unfulfilled. When you truly listen to your heart and you follow your heart and you listen to those nudges we’re talking about. You trust them, you act from them, you act from this place of divine guidance and you have a heart of service and you’re activating that every single day. Regardless of the results and where they’re at, you have this inner sense of fulfillment, fullness, happiness, joy and gratitude, that is powerful. It’s everything.
