Elections have a significant impact on the dynamics of social media platforms. Every time there is an election, everyone’s engagement on every social media platform goes cold. The algorithm on the platforms changes our engagement and gives more priority to political ads on all social media platforms.
However, this doesn’t have to be the case. In this episode, Dr. Terri Levine discusses the impact of elections on engagement across social media platforms and guides listeners on how to grow their social media presence consistently.

Hey there, it’s Dr. Terri Levine. Welcome back to Digital Marketing for Coaches & Consultants. And today, we have to talk about the fact that, every time there’s an election, it’s like everyone’s engagement on every platform goes hot and goes cold. And DMs blow up with social media stuff, and people complaining about the elections. And what I’ve seen in every election, been in this industry for 34 years, or so, is that what the algorithm does is changes our engagement and really starts giving more priority to all these political apps, it’s on all social media platforms.
So, one of my client family members is a business consultant, has about 80,000 followers on their main platform that they use. And they don’t usually pay a lot of attention to engagement metrics, however, they got in touch with me last week and said, “Hey, my engagement is, literally, down about 30%.” And I went and checked my engagement, and my engagement is up around 52%. So, what I want to say is everyone’s engagement is down or inconsistent, however, if you know how to keep your engagement consistent, you can consistently keep it growing and not allow whether it’s Elon Musk, or whether it’s Mark Zuckerberg, or Microsoft, whoever it is to control what’s being seen.
So, let me give you the game plan that I give my client family members, it’s a super easy model. I have used it to grow my social media platforms, and I’ve done this for all my client family members. And this model hasn’t changed at all. In all the years that social media has been around, it is still the same. So, the model is very simple. There’s just two steps. Step number one is to build a big loyal following on one platform. And you’re not going to control that platform, it’s a social media platform. So whatever that is for you; Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, IG, I don’t care what that is. TikTok, it doesn’t really matter.
Right after that, the second thing that you do is you drive your followers to a platform you do control. This is what most people miss. Whether that’s email, a blog, a podcast, your website, it really doesn’t matter. The key word here for your takeaway is control. It doesn’t matter what business you’re building, the number one thing that you have to have is control, which is why building your business on any social media platform without control is like you’re going to buy a house in the forest, but you don’t bother to have an insurance policy that protects you from possible forest fires.
It’s unsafe, and it’s really not smart at all, and it actually puts you in a super vulnerable position. Just as the big accounts who are currently crying to me about poor engagement, poor engagement, I give them the statement bias. So, do yourself a favor. It doesn’t matter where you are currently in your online business journey, build the one platform where your audience hangs out and immediately drive the followers to a platform that you do control; blogs, emails, podcasts, websites, etc. Stay tuned.
